How to make flashcards with ChatGPT
Add Azri as a custom connector in ChatGPT, then ask it to turn notes, transcripts or a long explanation into flashcards. They go straight into your Azri deck on iPhone — no copying, no CSV.
What changes when ChatGPT is connected to Azri
ChatGPT can already write flashcards as text. The hard part is getting them out of the chat and into something that schedules your reviews. The Azri Connector handles that step. Behind the scenes it uses MCP (Model Context Protocol), an open standard ChatGPT supports through custom connectors.
After setup, ChatGPT can create a deck, add cards to it and look up cards you already have. You check the proposed cards in the chat, confirm, and they’re in your Azri library, ready to study.
Before you start
-
Azri on your iPhone
Free on the App Store. Open it once and sign in with your Apple ID.
-
Azri Pro
The Azri Connector is a Pro feature because it uses cloud sync. Try it free for three days.
-
ChatGPT Developer mode
Custom connectors only appear once Developer mode is on. Step 3 shows where.
How to add Azri to ChatGPT
Five steps, and you only do them once.
Open ChatGPT → Settings → Apps & Connectors
From the ChatGPT sidebar or your profile, open Settings → Apps & Connectors.
Turn on Developer mode
Scroll to the bottom and open Advanced settings. Toggle Developer mode on — only then will ChatGPT show the option to add custom connectors.
Add a new connector
Back on Apps & Connectors, tap Create. Name it “Azri Flashcards”, paste the URL below as the MCP Server URL, and set authentication to OAuth.
https://mcp.azri.app/v1/mcp
Sign in with Apple & approve
Tap Create. A browser tab opens for OAuth — sign in with the Apple ID you use for Azri, approve read & create access, and ChatGPT can now call Azri.

Prompts that turn a chat into a deck
Name the deck, say how many cards you want and what belongs on each side. If the deck doesn’t exist yet, ask ChatGPT to create it.
-
Here’s the transcript of a lecture I watched. Create a deck called “History — French Revolution” and make 20 cards on the key events and dates: [paste transcript]
-
Create a deck called “Interview Prep — System Design” with 15 cards on caching, sharding and load balancing. Question on the front, a two-sentence answer on the back.
-
Make a deck called “German A2 — Verbs” with 25 common separable verbs and their English meanings. Add reverse cards.
-
Turn this article into 10 flashcards and save them to a new deck called “Reading — Sleep Science”: [paste article]
-
Quiz me on photosynthesis. When we’re done, save every question I got wrong as a card in a deck called “Biology — Photosynthesis”.
Getting cleaner cards from ChatGPT
Name the deck in every request
Azri matches decks by name, so say the full name — “Interview Prep — System Design”, not “my interview deck”. If nothing matches, Azri suggests the closest deck names instead of guessing.
Ask for the format you want
Tell ChatGPT what goes on each side: “term on the front, definition on the back” or “question on the front, one-sentence answer”.
Reverse cards for words, not facts
For vocabulary, ask for reverse cards: Azri adds a linked card in the other direction, and each is reviewed on its own schedule. Leave it off for one-way facts.
Check the list before you confirm
The connector asks ChatGPT to show you the proposed cards before saving. Trim weak ones there — “drop 3 and 7, merge 5 and 6” — then confirm.
Split long material
Azri saves up to 50 cards per request, and reverse cards count as two. For a long transcript, work chapter by chapter.
