About Azri
Azri is a flashcard app for iPhone and iPad. One person makes it: Astemir Boziev, a solo developer in Versailles, France
Who makes Azri
I’m Astemir Boziev, and I make Azri on my own. I build the iPhone and iPad app, the web app, the Save to Azri Chrome extension and the Azri Connector. I started it in 2020, when I was learning Japanese and couldn’t find a flashcard app I liked.
Azri is published by Astemir Boziev EI, my sole proprietorship registered in France. The legal notice has the details.

From Simple Anki to Azri
In 2020 I was a junior QA automation engineer with a thing for languages. I speak Circassian, English and Russian, and that year I started learning Japanese with a tutor. I needed a way to keep track of all the new words, found flashcards, and tried Anki and every similar app I could find. They were either overcomplicated or clunky, so I built my own.
I called it Simple Anki, and the first version was exactly that: so basic it didn’t have spaced repetition, because I didn’t yet know how to build it. People still left kind reviews, so I kept going. I rewrote it, added deck search and audio recording, then redesigned it, and it reached about 300 downloads a day. My first try at a subscription sold nothing. Not one.
Next I rebuilt the app in SwiftUI and added spaced repetition, a quiz mode, folders, and .apkg and CSV import. Downloads fell anyway. After a hard year I stopped working on it and even let my Apple developer membership lapse, then renewed it some time later to give the app one more chance.
Then downloads and reviews started climbing again, for no reason I could ever find. That was the push I needed. I gave the app a new look and kept shipping, and on 23 February 2026 I launched Pro. The core study features are free: no limits on cards, decks, folders or reviews. Simple Anki is now called Azri. It’s the same app on the same App Store listing, so your decks and progress stayed put when the name changed.
Today Azri schedules reviews with spaced repetition (FSRS), imports Anki decks, and turns notes, photos and PDFs into flashcards with AI. The free app includes 3 AI uses a week, shared between card generation and auto-translation. Pro makes AI unlimited and adds photo and audio cards, cloud sync, the web app, the Chrome extension and the Azri Connector, which lets Claude, ChatGPT and other AI apps save flashcards to Azri.
I wrote the longer version, with screenshots of every redesign, on Reddit: The 6 year story of my app.
What Azri is, and isn’t
The old name had “Anki” in it, but Azri has never been part of the Anki project.
Azri is
- An independent flashcard app for iPhone and iPad, made by one developer.
- Free on the App Store, with no ads and no card limit. Pro is optional.
- Built on open-source FSRS: swift-fsrs in the app and ts-fsrs in the web app.
- Able to open Anki decks: it imports .apkg and CSV files as new cards.
Azri isn’t
- Affiliated with or endorsed by the Anki project.
- An AnkiWeb client. It doesn’t sync with AnkiWeb.
- On Android. There’s no Android version, and it isn’t on the roadmap for now.
Anki® and AnkiMobile are made by Anki’s own developers. See how Azri compares with Anki.
